I saw the movie again last week and I'm pretty sure now that it's not better than The Avengers.
This movie is a lot more style than substance, though it doesn't completely lack substance, but the few moment of substance don't really make as much of an impact as I would have like. Even the first time, i did think there was too much action, but second time it was even more obvious. I would actually be curious just to know how much action there is, maybe someone should time it.
I don't think I'll watch it any more times and it's certainly not a movie I'll see several years down the line.
Although Avengers hasn't exactly been a movie I've watched several years down the line either- I think I only really rewatched it within a couple of years after its release but I think I liked it more than Civil War for the novelty factor.
Civil War had a lot of other problems too besides the action being too much. For example the villain's entire plan is actually quite ridiculous and relies on too much coincidence.
Also
I gotta say that despite it being a joy to see Spiderman, the whole Tony recruiting him thing makes Tony look really very bad, that he put this kid in danger and essentially tricked/blackmailed him into being on his side, without giving him the whole story. Not to mention it goes against his whole stance with the accords- cause he should really have gotten Spidey to sign them first. They definitely forced Spidey into the movie for no real reason.
I also really hated that stupid
Sharon Carter/Steve forced romance, that was even worse than Black Widow & Hulk. and especially so soon after PEggy's funeral was actually quite creepy.
.
Steve is way too overpowered in the movie as well, I guess cause he's the hero, but it's kinda ridiculous what he's capable of here. On the other hand, Vision was underpowered and barely utilised.
The editing was pretty shoddy at some points- I think the worst was after a dramatic/sad scene, they immediately cut to a next one, not allowing any breathing room to take it in. And on at least one occasion it cut to a funny scene which made it even worse.
the soundtrack plain sucked, like I honestly can't think of even one memorable piece of music that stuck in my head after the movie. The trailer music was better. I know most people don't care about music, but for me, it impacts how I view a movie a lot, the movies I love the most always tend to be the ones with amazing soundtracks.
Of course every movie has problems and I don't think any of these things make it a bad movie, not by a longshot. It's still very good, but I do think it's very overrated now. But I can see why, it's very entertaining the first time and if I didn't try to think about the movie any more after seeing it, I wouldn't really care about these flaws either. The only reason I'm really doing this is cause I enjoy thinking more about movies afterwards, I dont' just want to watch and forget about them.
I kinda felt the same way about Star Wars the Force Awakens- totally loved that movie first time, but it gets worse after I rewatch instead of getting better.
