The first trailer for this film just premiered and it looks absolutely epic. I've been following the production of this film ever since it was announced and, I must say, it exceeds all of my expectations. I'm really hoping this turns out to be an exceptionally successful film, 'cause ultimately, it's the success of original cinematic works that promote the production of future "off-beat", original cinematic works.

Brilliant Trailer!
Very, very clearly a James Gunn movie through and through. The actors are all perfect ...especially Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. I think Tony Stark may have met his match when it comes to being the proverbial a-hole in a superhero group in the form of Starlord. Smart move to introduce the characters to the audience like that.
"They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy." "What a bunch of a-holes."
Cut to lameass group shot. 'Hooked on a Feeling' plays. Epic.
I don't remember being so excited for a marvel movie before, not even The Avengers. Can't wait.

Couldn't agree with you more. Hooked on a Feeling was THE perfect touch.
I'm quite happy that they decided not to reveal Rocket Raccoon's voice, or Groot's. Moreover, the production design looks absolutely amazing. Absolutely effing amazing. I love Nebula's look. . . And Drax's. . . And Gamora's. Easily my most anticipated Marvel film to date. On a coincidental note, I can't remember greatly anticipating The Avengers either. In fact, I think my all-time MCU anticipation list would be topped with Guardians of the Galaxy, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Way too amped, though.

i'm looking forward to this too, but it's not really original- its based on comic book, so don't think its going to help in that sense for other movies.

i'm looking forward to this too, but it's not really original- its based on comic book, so don't think its going to help in that sense for other movies. Original?! Huh?! It's based on a comic book, like all the other Marvel movies before. I don't really understand your statement. Man …the more I watch the trailer the better it gets. I mean, what's not to like here ...It's in space, it looks funny and weird, it's directed by James Gunn, it takes everything great about comic books and runs with it into the far end of space and I love it. I love Firefly, I love Farscape, I adore Star Wars, and I know that I am definitely going to love this. I also love that Marvel isn't afraid to take risks with their movies. I really hope this breaks out. As excited as I was for The Avengers, I’m so much more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy. So far, I’m not even this excited for The Avengers 2, and it will star one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked for The Avengers 2. But Guardians is a different beast all together. It’s everything fun and great about comic book movies and Marvel movies in particular, plus Spaceballs. It’s the biggest risk Marvel has taken yet, and they’ve already taken some nut-crushingly big risks. Too often we complain that Hollywood is dry and out of ideas. Okay, this might be an adaptation, but it is a risky adaption of a comic book that until recently no one even in the comic book community gave a s*** about. We need movies like this, and we need them to succeed so that Hollywood will take more risks. On the other hand, just look at DC for a second. They are complaining about how there are certain characters, Wonder Woman for example, that are too complex or too difficult to try to create a film for. That's why it takes years for a script to be created ...On the other hand, Marvel is releasing a movie this year where the main characters consist of a half-human and half-alien, a green badass alien-babe, a resurrected human, a bad-mouth gun-wielding raccoon and a tree. Point being ...DC comics needs to step up their game. I just have a really good feeling about this movie. Why? It looks helluva fun. It has characters with personality. It looks weird. It looks action packed. It just looks different, and that in a good way. And it has the Marvel name. Also, I am so fu*king here for Rocket/Groot buddy a$$-kicking shenanigans. And Chris Pratt can get it, sweet jesus.

^^ Wow. I have never seen so much excitement over a trailer I am glad you enjoyed it so much I personally find the trailer quite average. I don't know who these Guardians of Galaxy characters are, so all I see is yet another superhero movie. But I was equally unaware of IronMan until the movie came out and my mind was blown So hopefully this will be equally fresh and entertaining.

And Chris Pratt can get it, sweet jesus. I guess I just misunderstood the OPs first post, i thought by original you mean original idea. but I see now, what you really mean is not original, but just offbeat/ wacky. comic book movies are nothing new in hollwyood. And while this might be slightly wacky to normal comic books, it's not really a risk as Marvel is currently having a huge run of popular movies. Plus more offbeat comic book movies have also been done like Hellboy (this is a big one), Watchmen, 300, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, V for Vendetta, Sin City, even the new Lego Movie etc. so I wouldn't say Marvel is doing something very new here. In fact they are in a far better position than those movies were because marvel already ahve an established audience and they have nothing to lose. EVen of GOG is a failure, it won't affect them. Watchmen in fact is DC by the way, so how can you say they aren't taking risks. They even tried Jonah Hex and Green Lantern. It's just that unfortunately DCs risks havne't paid off (apart from BAtman series), even Man of Steel wasn't that successful, it got terrible critic reviews and mixed audience (although I personally liked it quite a lot despite its flaws), so they are naturally more wary. If those movies had been successful, I doubt they would be worried at all. Green Lantern especially I think was key, that would have set off movies for Flash, Wonde rWoman, but sadly wasn't to be so they had to restart with Man of Steel, but even that wasn't as big as they would have liked. And then there's the fact that it's not actually DC, the movie stuido is WB and they do a ton of other movies, not just DC comic ones, so obviously they can't produce at same rate as Marvel studios who only do marvel movies. But anywho, last thing I want to do is start a DC vs Marvel war, because I actually love both and I hate the fan fighting between them. It just really annoys me when anyone puts one down to raise the other. But Marvel is not really taking risks. All their movies pretty mcuh have the same entertainment style- fun popcorn movies. I have yet to see a deep, thought provoking Marvel comic movie. Iron man 3 for a while looked like it could be that, but turned out not to be. Now don't get me wrong, like I said, I love Marvel movies. Thor: The Dark world is among my favourites this year and I loved the Avengers. But still, none of the marvel movies, have come close to even 10% of emotional value of Nolan's batman series. But not saying there's anything wrong with that either, because they are not meant to be like that and I don't expect it from them. I think it's just different styles of filmmaking and I for one I'm glad that there's both types of movies out there for me to enjoy. Overall, yes I"ve liked more Marvel movies compared to DC if you go by quantity. But don't think it's because DC haven't tried. They have, but they've failed more than they've succeeded. I guess they've misjudged the scripts/directors/ whatever, but I'm sure they did not want to make a bad movie. Although thankfully, the one big success they have is my favourite. But then if you look at animated movies, DC have got some amazing ones in there.

Guardians of the Galaxy 100/10Wow what a terrific movie. Best Marvel film since the 1st Iron Man. This movie has everything you could possibly want in a summer movie. It's got a Spielberg fun quality to it, and the visuals are out of this world. The whole cast is just brilliant. The plot does not exactly follow the normal action movie plot. It's a bit insane. But here's what I really want to talk about. This movie has got HEART. It is undoubtedly the best movie in terms of character writing. Every member of the team has a shattered past. Gunn really dive into each member's past and the reason why they are here saving the galaxy. What I didn't much like about the Avengers was, that the movie did not really talk about the why they want to fight Loki. Not need, but want. Whedon knows how to write great dialogues but I think Marvel should hire Gunn to oversee character development. Cap 2 did a good job of handling characters, but this takes it up another notch. Gunn really outdid himself here in terms of characters. {Spoiler} Star-Lord misses his mum. Gamora had seen what Thanos had done and wants no part of it. Drax had his family killed by Thanos. Rocket is a angry and pitiful creature. My heart broke when I saw him naked. Groot is a lonely but caring soul who is following his best bud. Everyone has a reason why they are on the team.
The character moments are great. Many people may have missed it, but the moments where Groot said ''We are Groot'' and Drax consoling Rocket was the most powerful moments for me.
I was expecting a lot of fun, but it was the heart that sold me. Highly recommended ...really everyone should see it.
Also, just when I thought that Rocket Raccoon was a big middle finger to DC from Marvel, they go and sneak {Spoiler} Howard the Duck in the post credits Scene

Loved this movie as well - an easy 10/10. Delivered absolute entertainment and some excellent space action. Plus like @pepper said -- the character development through the movie was brilliant. You knew exactly why every character was doing what they were doing. Hence none of them was boring. The soundtrack through the movie was brilliant. And the connect between Rocket and Groot was the highlight of the movie.
Major props to Christ Pratt .. He was my favorite character on Parks and Rec, and now he has clearly shown that he can pull off a movie as the lead. Plus looks like his a darn good actor from the looks of it. Eager to see him in other projects.
@pepper - why is Rocket Raccoon a finger to DC ? Is there some history behind this ?
--
Compared to Avengers though, I would still pick Avengers over this. Whedon dint need to answer the "want" question because there was no answer to that. The Avengers assemble to save the day because they CAN. Their character development and origins had been covered well enough in the other movies. The conflict/connection between the Avengers was very well established through the movie.

BTW, the movie seems to have exceeded Box Office expectations .. only behind Transformers and Winter Soldier this year as far as opening weekend is concerned
MARVEL is on fire here and seems to have a spectacular lineup all the way till 2017 (as announced at ComicCon) .. massive pressure on DC to even compete.

DC vs Marvel, listen to Joss Whedon when asked about what he would say to DC to step Up.
Pretty much exactly how I feel. I can't stand these wars. I've already talked about it before so don't want to rehash too much. But bottom line, I don't think DC should even try to compete with Marvel, because that is a lose-lose situation. To start with, they are behind in their own cinematic universe by about 5 years, so that's an impossible gap to overcome. They should just stick to their own thing.
John Barrowman, who stars in Arrow, also talked about liking both DC & Marvel and finding these wars stupid. It's nice to see people from both sides do that.
BTW, I dont' think rocket racoon is actually a finger to DC- I highly doubt Marvel would be so childish and I"m pretty sure there's no history etc. My guess is this is another fan created thing.

Come on, DC v/s Marvel has been an intense rivalry for a long time. It is most natural for it to spill over to the movies and frankly speaking, it is an entertaining rivalry with both sides having good points. About DC/WB doing dark movies. It works well when you have someone as talented as Nolan at the helm of affairs. Plus it is not always dark/brooding. Green Lantern was in a lighter vein, except that it s8cked MOS was somewhere in between. There have been funky Batman/Superman movies as well. Some of them really bad. In the movie business, (right now) MARVEL Studios clearly knows what-the-audience-wants better than DC/WB and is able to put out movie after movie while being Fresh. Plus they seem to hire very talented crew members, especially casting directors. And of course they plan ahead and seem to have a clear big picture vision. Their Phase 3 line up looks absolutely brilliant, and frankly speaking I am more excited about each one of those movies individually than I am about Batman v/s Superman Anyways, point is: rivalry will be there and it actually makes things interesting. MARVEL is doing a fabulous job right now and is being loved by the comic book fans and regular movie going audience. WB/DC have a lot of catching up to do, which is not impossible. They just need to figure things out quickly PS: I still don't get the thing about Rocket Racoon vs DC. What is the issue ?

^I think the rivarly is bad because its creating these stupid fan wars where it feels like you can't like both when you can.
And I truly feel like people are not giving DC a chance. They've only had one movie in their cinematic verse, it has just begun. So Man of Steel was maybe not that good and disappointed some people. Btw it was still a box office success so clearly there were those who liked it too and a user rating of 7/10 on IMDB is definitely not bad, it's pretty good. Its really only the critics who outright hated it. Audience reaction was better, there were many who liked it, but also those who didn't. But even if we accept it as a semi failure, that does not mean future movies are going to be the same tooo. People haven't even seen a freaking trailer yet for new movies and already putting down DC. Plus they have made announcements, its not like they are sitting doing nothing. People are just soo impatient and whining at every little thing.
Also its not like Marvel was striking gold in phase 1 either. Look at the user ratings of movies like Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, its worse or about the same as Man of Steel. hell, we still haven't got a Hulk sequel! Those movies weren't considered that good either, they were all very basic really, nothing overly special about them. A lot of people hadn't even seen them when they saw Avengers. Marvel was mainly riding on the success of Iron Man. And then the Avengers was truly brilliant, so that's when Marvel really got great and the general public really paid attention to them as a universe. Aslo phase two has been much better for them with both Thor and CA sequels being excellent movies.
But how can you compare a marvel universe with 10 movies (could be slightly off in the count) to a DC universe of 1 movie. Obviously Marvel will have more diversity, creativity etc at the moment. So when people say something like Marvel has Black Widow, while DC still doesn't have Wonder Woman , it makes no sense to me. Because Marvel took 5-6 movies to get there. And it's not even like DC has never had kickass female character, Nolan's Batman series had two of those. And Catwoman is more of a Black Widow equivalent anyway not Wonder Woman so I don't even get where the idea that DC is anti female characters comes from.
Even ignoring Nolan's series since this is a fresh start, DC now has Wonder Woman in just it's second movie. DC also has a more diverse cast with Jason Momoa, Dwayne Johnson, Gal GAdot, Ray Fisher. Yet most people don't give them credit for that. They only ever comment on what they are doing wrong.
A good comparison can only happen when DCs got at least 4-5 movies in this universe, and then you can start saying, how does it stand as a series compared to Marvel. And hell, it might end up sucking, and then it's fair to bash them. But right now it's not a series and its not a fair comparison.
Same argument with the rocket racoon thing- people have implied that it's a finger to DC because DC still doesn't have Wonder Woman while Marvel has the balls to do a racoon character. WEll I say that again makes no sense, Guardians of the Galaxy came after 10 marvel movies. DC still has plenty of time.
People conveniently ignore that DC is making TV shows on FLash, Constantine, Arrow, iZombie and instead just harp on about how DC are doing another Batman thing with Gotham.
Gosh, that got really long, but once I get started on this, I kinda go on rant. But I want to be clear, I am not denying that cinematically Marvel is ahead of DC, they are well ahead, but that's jsut my point- they are so ahead that you can't compare right now. And I don't see point in bashing DC constantly for being behind. At the start sure, but now, you are just bashing for same mistake, not new ones. I think DC fully realises they have been slow and made mistakes. Now they are trying to get back into it, and they deserve a chance.

You have made some good points, and I disagree with quite a few of them. So this will make for a fun discussion ^I think the rivarly is bad because its creating these stupid fan wars where it feels like you can't like both when you can. And I truly feel like people are not giving DC a chance. They've only had one movie in their cinematic verse, it has just begun. So Man of Steel was maybe not that good and disappointed some people. Its really only the critics who outright hated it. Audience reaction was better, there were many who liked it, but also those who didn't. IMO, Rivalries are entertaining as well as necessary. When you have two major, competing companies in the same business it is bound to split opinions on which one is better. It is almost natural. Plus it is important because it actually makes the companies work harder in trying to keep up with the competition. Anyways, the main point to be made here is - it is absolutely fair to compare DC/WB with MARVEL cinematically. They have both put out enough content already. They took different routes and in the long run MARVEL has come out triumphant. DC/WB have to be blamed for this "not being game a chance" deal. They brought themselves up to this point with some really bad decision making. I am sure you remember how MARVEL was being scoffed at for making the mediocre Hulk, while DC had dished out the spectacular Batman Begins. Then MARVEL came up with Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, but DC (Actually Nolan) trumped them with the once-in-a-lifetimeTDK. So, its not like MARVEL was never on the back foot. We can easily say that DC was ahead at that point. The place where MARVEL scored was they backed themselves and stuck to their Phase I plan despite the failed Hulk movies. Then tasted success with Iron Man and never looked back after that. Plus they got directors, writers, casting directors who seemed to be very passionate about the source material and that helped immensely. Compare that to DC/WB who literally gave up on their plan after their first Phase-I movie failed miserably - the Green Lantern. It was supposed to be in the same tone as the MARVEL movies, but they messed it up. And the result was seen with MOS where the movie had the NOLAN hangover, but was also trying to fight the dark-brooding nature of the Dark Knight trilogy. So they pretty much shot themselves in the foot with their decisions. So while MARVEL Was lagging until 4-5 years ago (and faced their share of backlash), now they have to be given absolute credit that in the DC v/s MARVEL cinematic rivalry, MARVEL are ahead. and its not like DC doesn't have a chance anymore. Its just that they still seem confused on what needs to be done. Start with MOS2, then add Batman-Wonder Woman to it midway because they feel they are lagging behind. I could be horribly wrong, but their decisions seem rushed. Advantage MARVEL. -- On a different note - you mention the ratings of MARVEL Phase I. They may not be rated very high, but when they came out they had a certain sense of freshness to it which couldn't be ignored. That sense of MARVEL-doing-something-new stayed with the audience and developed further with Phase2. Plus, personally speaking, they were all individually better than MOS/Green Lantern. Except maybe the 2005 Hulk. I would any day re-watch either one of Thor, Cap1, Incredible Hulk over MOS/Green Lantern. -- I went on a rant as well. Some of it might not make sense .. but whatever --

I agree DC made bad decision making, never denying that, but that's in the past, and people are using it to blame them for their restarted new universe. It would be like if I started bashing Marvel for Daredevil and the first Hulk. People have already bashed DC when Green Lantern came out, what's the point in still complaining about that, instead of waiting to see what they are doing with this universe. And I never liked the DC/Marvel war even when Nolan was making the Batman movies, so it's not liek I"m only hating the war now when DC is behind. I actually commented on it a few times back then as well, because there it made no sense either. It was still totally different approaches. Nolans' series was only 1 hero focus, and based in a real world, definitely more serious toned. Marvel was multiple heroes, very unrealistic world and lighter tone. I might have my own preference where I liked Nolan's more, but I still enjoyed marvel a lot particularly Iron Man 1 and Avengers. I certainly never tried to bash one over the other. Also now NOlans' series is over, so I don't think you can continue comparisons based on that idea. Really? Most people I knew hadn't cared much about them at all until Avengers. Some hadn't even bothered to see the movies, myself included lol. I only saw them after I saw Avengers. I defiitely never heard people talk about them highly otherwise I would in fact have seen them before. So I think it varies, not everyone felt the same way and this is why the ratings are similar to MOS. I don't think I"m wrong in saying that in general, those movies were not considered great, only decent. of course there will be those who think they are brilliant as well as those who think they are rubbish, but that's personal preference. All we have to go on for overall audience reaction is user ratings. And same is true with MOS, that there are those who loved it, which everyone forgets, otherwise it wouldn't even have a good user rating. I don't even agree with you about freshness, neither of those movies had anything really new to offer that previous superhero movies hadn't done. Fresh is what I would call stuff like X-Men, Spiderman 1, Batman Begins, Iron Man, V for Vendetta, Hell Boy etc. Thor was very basic and the plot was incrediblly predictable, the earth scenes were very dull too. The asgard parts & Loki was the saving grace of that movie. CA1 had an good start while Steve was in the process of becoming a super soldier (though still predictable), but a totally boring second half with an unmemorable villain. IMO those movies were just as flawed as MOS was. Just flawed in different ways so people who like them will be different. DC just happens to be targetting a different sector of the audience and yes perhaps that is small sector than Marvel, but nothing wrong with that. Well that's personal choice of course and fair enough. But I would prefer MOS slightly to both Thor and Cap 1- I rate them all about the same though between 7-8/10. But I would prefer MOS by a bigger margin to Incredible Hulk- not intention to rewatch ever, and Iron Man 2 (which i never even finished watching the first time). Though Green Lantern was god awful I agree. I really don't know how they went so wrong. But in defense of WB/DC, i don't think it's like they purposely screwed it up. They hired the director who made has successfully rebooted james bond with Casiono Royale. Ryan Reynolds I think was also a good choice at the time. They even hired GEoff Johns who is a big name in DC comcis as a co producer and creative consultant for the movie.

I meant Freshness in the sense that even though they were different movies, they all gave you the feeling on an interconnect and despite the same old plots, the execution was new and in sync with the different superhero characters.
IronMan was obviously one of the best origin stories ever done on screen. Thor was simply visually stunning and vibrant besides having LOKI as one of the most entertaining villains. Cap1 with its WW links and the rustic tone was very different from the other two, while having a similar 'superhero' plot. Ofcourse it is all subjective, so you don't have to feel the same about these movies.
--
About DC bashing. I only bring it up because the Batman v Superman development seems awfully similar to the post-Green Lantern phase (as I mentioned in the other thread). I have nothing against either side, and I will be the first one to rewatch a DC/WB movie if they churn out something great. I just have more faith in Marvel right now

My comments about DC bashing were never relaly directed to you abhi, I think you've been fair. You may critise but at least you back it up with some good points. It was more a general comment on what i've experienced, I mean i've seen more people bashing DC after GOTG released, instead of just praising hte movie itself. And this happened after Cap America TWS as well. I just dont' get why everything has to be compared.

I think the comparison comes from the fact that DC Comics have a great gallery or superheroes and supervillains. The thing is, they really begin rushing things, and don't completely rely on quality. They're too caught up in staying in the race instead of adopting a "slow and steady wins the race" philosophy. Green Lantern was an absolutely atrocious film, and despite Superman being my absolute favourite superhero, Man of Steel was on the wrong side of "average." So people look at a fairly unremarkable superhero like Captain America and think. . . They knocked those films straight outta the league. . . Why can't DC Comics (Warner Bros.) do the same?
Look at Nolan's Batman trilogy as an example; Nolan did exactly what he wanted with those films, at his own pace, in his own style (no mimicry), and those films are classics in the superhero genre.

Finaaaally saw this, blame my friends, kept delaying it. Anyway, I loved the movie especially Groot, my favourite character in this for sure. Rocket was also awesome. I really liked all the alien worlds created, some great visuals. Chris Pratt is also so charismatic as Peter Quill. Actually even Drax, Gamora are well acted/written. The emotional moments were very touching too. Not really any major flaws, maybe a bit slow to get going, it did take me some time to totally get involved, but once I did, it was a really fun ride. And I wasn't too much of a fan of the distract the main villain with dance off, I mean really, is Ronan a complete idiot or what even if he doesn't know what dancing is, he can't be so stupid to let himself be distracted. I really don't like this making villian look stupid for humour and plot convenience that seems to happen far too much in movies these days. Ronan was such a cool villain until that point. And they did something similar earlier with Nebula too when Drax shot her, though she came back, but that was predictable anyway. But still those two are very minor things, overall I really enjoyed it. I don't think it's the best marvel movie though if I had to rank them, but it is probably best in character development especially considering they only had one movie to develop a lot of characters. However, as a whole I think I will still prefer Thor: The Dark World, Captain Amera: TWS, Iron Man, The Avengers (not necessarily in that order).

If you hadn't pointed out the silliness of those "spoiler" scenes, I wouldn't even have given it a second thought. It just flowed so well with the movie and matched the overall mood perfectly.
Trust MARVEL to pull something whack like that with ease and grace.
Chris Pratt is a star in the making. The guy has immense screen presence. Even in Parks and Rec, where he is surrounded by some excellent actors he just shines whenever he is on the screen. Excellent casting choice. Cant wait to see his next projects

Doesn't Chris Pratt look a lot like Graeme Smith?

Trust MARVEL to pull something whack like that with ease and grace Yeah I'm sure there's many who feel that way. Even I did find it funny, and sure I laughed, but I was also thinking, wish there was another way of doing humour without making that specific character look so stupid cause I think it sure as hell did not fit his character, even if it might fit the mood of the movie. Actually now that you mention it, this has been my major beef with a lot of marvel movies, so I so totally disagree with you there lol. I find I come very close to thinking a movie is perfect and then they insert these moments of humour which sure they are funny, but IMO they also ruin the seriousness of that moment and you get a total lack of any real 'threat' posed to the main characters. And the thing I find strange is that it's not like the movies lack any seriousness at all, so you can't evne use the excuse- it's not meant to be serious, cause even GOTG did have some serious moments that weren't ruined like that. But then they go and ruin the most important one. Plus the idea of distrating villain by doing something strange like dancing or singing isn't even unique or interesting, I"ve seen it so many times nin most comedy type movies or shows, hell even used in Chennai express lol. The only time I liked it a villain being made look stupid in a Marvel movie was in the AVengers, with Hulk/Loki.

I guess we will have to disagree on this then I felt that it was just brilliant and flowed so well, especially with the importance that was placed on the mix tape. The priceless token given by his mother is the one that helps save the day .. making it more valuable than any tesseract or other powerful weapon. Reminded me of Harry Potter in fact, where Love proved to be the most powerful weapon (Lily's sacrifice, and also Snape's) Also, this works so well with MARVEL because they try to stay true to the comic book feel of the comic books. The cheesiness works in its favor
