this is a weird one...for the last 2 days, while using Google Chrome, when I open a page/window/tab whatever you call it, it's too far over to the right & I cant move it, cant maximise it etc... cant even post here (I'm on Internet Explorer at the moment, which is working fine!) also, there's no slider bar (on Google Chrome) on the right, so I cant scroll down...this is the MOST annoying thing, but I can USUALLY use the down arrow. (not always) coincidentally, Windows have advised that they are not supporting XP any more & that I should get a new computer (a chance would be a fine thing!) but unfortunately, I prefer IE layout to Googe Chrome & it's much more user friendly. so my only option at the moment is to open both Google Chrome & IE for anything I want to see, & see what works best. I'm so glad to see that IE works here still, cos I cant post thru Google Chrome. I've noticed that many sites will not work thru IE any more (ie youtube) so I'm stuck between a rick & a hard place. any suggestions on fixing the Google Chrome display? (so that I can maximise pages etc) signed Desperate As Usual

If I get this right, you prefer IE to Chrome, and are using the latter only because some sites claim not to support IE. I think IE is supported by most sites including YouTube, but it depends on what version of IE you have. Can you confirm the version - upgrading IE alone might address the problem

(that's why they're telling me to get a new computer - what cheek!)

Maybe you should try updating Chrome as well. Oh, there should be a PrtScn button on your keyboard. Keep the google chrome window open, and press that button. Then open msPaint.exe (or Paint), and click Edit > Paste. Then save the picture (File menu > Save) and then attach it here But before that, maybe you should try updating Google Chrome as well. Here are the instructions: 1. Open Google Chrome 2. On the top right corner, you will see an icon with " three horizontal lines" 3. Click on those three lines. Ideally, if if your Chrome is not updated, there will be an option for " Update Google Chrome". Click that. It will do a little downloading and installing and then it will ask you to Restart the browser. Click on Restart. Chrome should be updated and hopefully will be better to use.

sandidi, I think your window is not fully opened. Question - how do you close Chrome? Did you try maximising it - single click on the Tab name, and using your keyboard, hit Alt and Spacebar. A small menu should pop up - select maxisize / restore from it. The Chrome window should now take up all the available display your monitor, and the maximise / minimise buttons should be visible

So I had a thought and went thru PROPERTIES. NORMAL was selected so I changed it to MAXIMISE and voila! all's well... I never would have gotten there tho without your assistance. it's funny you should ask how do I close Chrome, cos that must be the answer. sometimes when I opened Chrome again, it would say it hadnt been closed done properly before. Not sure how I should be closing it down *properly* tho? And should I now try and update Chrome or leave well enough alone?

Good to know that fixed the issue. I don't use Chrome, but in general, it is a good practice to update the browser to the latest version. Chrome has auto update enabled in its recent versions, so if you downloaded your copy recently, chances are that setting is ON. You can check the Chrome support page here for details on when it updates the browser - support.google.com/chrome/answer/95414?hl=en

Regarding that 'machine' upgrade part, updating the OS alone would be sufficient - I would suggest Windows 7, unless you think you want a new machine Since Win XP is going End of Life on April 8, there will not be any security updates or fixes made available by Microsoft beyond that date

Sandi, Agantuk was saying it's not necessary to dump the computer.. just upgrade the operating system to Windows 7! You'd be so glad you did.

Or if your computer can't run 7 (as mine can't) you can upgrade it to Vista and still get a little more use out of it.

No offence to Vista users, but I would avoid Windows Vista as much as possible. It is easily the weakest OS released by Microsoft (ever?) and you are better off upgrading to Windows 7, and even Windows 8/8.1 Infact, your PC has a better chance of running Windows 7 than it does with Windows Vista. Windows 7 is lighter and uses less resources. Win7 can actually run decent on 1GB of RAM. Vista would probably internally combust and set your machine on fire Okay, maybe not. sandidi - here is a Microsoft tool to check if your system can handle Windows7: windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

Most people do not realise that Windows 7 is Windows Vista re-packaged However, I do agree many of the basic UX interactions were messed up on Vista which made it such a pain for the user. Otherwise, it was a pretty solid effort. The worst consumer version would have to be Win Me (Millenium).

Oh right I forgot WindowsMe. That wins.
But as a user I hated Vista. Used it for 3 years. I used to curse my laptop for having s***ty hardware and not running windows Vista well. Until I upgraded to Windows7. The improvement was more than significant.
Vista was a more like a beta version of Win7.

Life used to be so much easier before internet!

I ran both the tools to see what this system could handle; no for 7, yes for Vista. I've used both before and didn't have problems with either; different strokes. Since the newest laptop with 7 bricked itself last year, my choices are Vista or Linux, which I'm not that interested in. I'm glad you came to a solution you're happy with, Sandidi.

I have another query - I'm getting messages to update my driver from Win-Zip... should I? how do I know if this is genuine?

If it Win-Zip and WinZip (former with a hyphen, you may ignore). Typically neither needs to update your drivers, they are just trying to upsell to you.
