I think my pc was infected by some malware or similar and it shut down my virus protection software. Luckily I was able to install free edition of superantispyware and it appeared to have removed the malware. However when I try to install the virus protection. .it still doesn't work. I also tried to run free versions of AVG and AVaast but the program file doesn't even open. So clearly something is still wrong.
Does anyone habe any suggestions on what to try next?
oh and i did tryuninstalling superantispyware before reinstalling the other stuff asni know it can conflict

Have you tried Malwarebytes? If not, please do. More often than not, it should be able to address any issues. If you still face problems, it may be time for a reinstall.

Are you using windows ? If yes, I would suggest trying the Windows Restore feature. I have managed to control many mishaps on my parents PC by just restoring to a sane version of the OS. Ofcourse you need to have it enabled beforehand to make sure it has created "restore points" for it to restore from

I'll second the vote for MalwareBytes. They have a free version that took care of cleaning up my granddaughter's computer. And it was really bad! If you don't want to spring for the Premium version, Microsoft's own free products (depending on your version of Windows) are very good: Microsoft Security Essentials up thru Windows 7, and Windows Defender for Windows 8 or 8.1.
I use System Restore often too... you should really have that feature enabled.

If you have a licensed copy ( ), call up MS. They will ask you to provide some information, and will provide with you a valid replacement copy. Doesn't matter when you purchased

^Oh really that's cool, but actually I asked my brother, he said he has the CD at his flat. He was one who installed in initially (though I don't know if legally or not lol) so I'll just use that next time he comes around.

Finally was able to reinstall windows (was busy with exams adn my bro still had to bring the cd), it did the trick and luckily I didn't lose any data either cause it saved it to another folder, thanks everyone!
I'll definitely set up a system restore now on lol.

Sandi got to Start/Windows icon->All programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. And then I think it will let you know if it's automatically set up or if you need to set one up. If you need to set one up, it will usually link you to another place to go from there and just follow instructions. Of course the above path might be slightly different depending on which windows you have, but it will still be under Accessories I believe. My other old computer actually had it happening automatically so it could for you as well. Just this one that got infected for some reason didn't have it set up automatic, not sure why.

thanks, will give it a go...
EDIT: just checked it out and there doesn't seem to be a System Restore feature. I notice I cant do defrags either, it automatically *optimises* ... I used to enjoy doing a defrag! lol

That's strange, maybe it's just in a different place. IT would be weird not to have it at all. What version of windows is it?

^I think the tablet/smart phone version for Windows 8 doesn't have system restore but the normal PC one should. Here's a guide I found online: linkScroll down to the part that says "manually creating restore point" if you want to create one. Or there's some other helpful things too like enabling system restore if it has been disabled for some reason. Hope that helps!

If you're not sure how to bookmark, tell me what browser you are using as it can be different for each one.

thanks Kiran, I will wait... but why are they saying it's free? yes it is , please click the Microsoft Page Link above, it is important to read the whole thing I've read, that after you install Windows 10 you need to update the driver software from your USB devices, otherwise they are not working anymore (normally this updates are starting automatic )
