Been listening to it all morning !!
IMO, one of the best (if not the best) compositions of Rahman and best all round Bollywood songever.
Such a complex song, executed flawlessly and to perfection. The lyrics are A-grade (Gulzar). And the greatest thing about it is, how well it fits with the narration of the movie. You can sense the tension and chemistry between the lead protagonists - the guy desperately yearning for her love
Also has to be the toughest song Sonu Nigam has ever sung. Requires him to unleash his full range. On top of that, the choreography and the visuals of the video are fantastic. If you think Chhaiya Chhaiya has SRK at his energetic best, then you need to watch Satrangi Re. His energy is even higher and also brings out his acting/emoting skills. Mesmerizing.
Like I said - the best all round song ever produced by Bollywood.
Its not surprising because it is what one would call, an EPIC collaboration - SRK-Rahman-Gulzar-Sonu-ManiRatnam.
I am sure there are a few more that come close, but this one just has no flaws whatsoever. What do you guys feel ?

Sadly to say this movie came aheads of its time when people don't ready to accept such kind of subject.

I just screened Dil Se for a class of 17 year old American students. It was so interesting to see the variety of reactions. It is for a class on war fiction; they still have some trouble with a serious film having a song like Chaiyya Chaiyya in it but this song, they really got. I wish SRK was prouder of this film. It is up there with his best, I think.

In this film I gave the credit to the director and the brilliant imaginative thoughts and poetry behind each song. I remember even Farah saying how easy it was for her to work on this film due to Mani's clarity of ideas and what he wants in each frame.

all the songs in this movie were top-notch in every way. I love them all, but Dil Se Re is amazing. definitely a movie ahead of its time.
