I had a black friend who visited India and she had a horrible experience. Even random people on the street would stare and say mean things. Then they appropriate all the allegedly cool things like phrases and ways of talking - repeating stuff like 'slay' and all slangs that came from black culture. The punjabi rappers who copy black guys' way of dressing and talking.
Zoya is so pretentious. At least Rohit Shetty just makes crappy blatant South ripoffs. This one tries to pass off 'inspired' movies as if she's making groundbreaking original work. Rap emerged out of a difficult living experience when black people were kept away from traditional music. But these Indian despos are rappers now and know nothing about what they are copying. Even that small modicum of respect is not there.
This movie is literally showing underground rap battles as if that's actually a thing in India. This is Mumbai, not Detroit, NY, or LA.

Racism remains an issue in India (and other places) but not sure what that has to do with this movie? Rap doesn't just belong to black people. It's based on a real indian rapper too so while they certainly took liberties it's not like they are completely inventing things.
Watch this movie become a Superhit, some people on this forum are clearly out of touch with the current BW audience

Wow, every thread on this forum is just going crazy. Rap is a genre just like Rock and Pop and what not. It doesnt belong to a race !!
And absolutely Ridiculous and borderline racist comments being made here against a community/nation (Desis/Indians). Not everyone is the same!! Disgusting

^How so? Everyone knows Indians are racist. So are white people. Of course everyone is not but the generalized sentiment is correct. The black community will tell you the same thing because they know and have experienced it.
To then appropriate black culture, whether it's their music, slangs, and dressing styles to make money without the proper respect and acknowledgment is not right.
Honestly, it's like if Kim Kardashian roamed around Los Angeles wearing saris and claimed they don't belong to anyone and is just clothing.

If Kim kardashian wishes to wear a saree and roam around in LA, she is more than welcome to do it. Why would anyone have an issue with this. She doesn't need to acknowledge a whole country or community to wear a dress. It's like saying western people do not have a right to assimilate Indian classical music in their music. Surpsied to see such narrow minded comments from sensible folks, during a time when the world is trying to be more accepting and shrinking. Sad!

Problem is with "generalization" of racism. No one can attribute racism to a whole country, a religion or any community in general. Exactly You can't make a generalized statement like this against a while community or nation. Its like saying all Americans are racist based on some incidents or their President

^Of course you can. If you think white people weren't racist in terms of how they colonized and brutalized brown and black countries, I don't know what to say. It took decades for people of color to even get similar rights in those white countries.
Same applies to Indians except they idolize whites and look down upon black people or their own lower castes.
Everyone is never the same but society itself does have these issues. To pretend they don't is like sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich.
Heck, India even complained so much when white countries tried to patent turmeric because they considered it theirs.
Cultural appropriation is a huge problem. You cannot just grab things from other people's cultures to benefit yourself without at least first giving them the proper acknowledgment and respect.

Are you trying to claim the desi underground scene organically developed rap on their own? They obviously didn't. It's a copy of the black music scene in the US. The same types of beats, the same rap battles and diss tracks, the same clothing of hoodies and same pompous walks... This movie also is just a copy of 8 Mile. They've even used the same dark colors and visuals. They've just thrown in some desi rapper names to make it look like it's not. And here you can watch the 8 Mile/Gully Boy mash-up trailer. www.news18.com/news/buzz/gully-boy-trailer-mash-up-with-eminems-8-mile-is-the-best-thing-youll-watch-today-1997861.html

I have noticed an increase in India bashing since SRK's films started failing back home. Now we are the worst group of people on the planet, I guess. If you have problems with India / Indians, this is NOT the platform for it, do it elsewhere. People rile up over negative comments about one Indian (SRK) and bash India like there is no tomorrow. It has to stop now.
This a final warning.

Nice Trailer. Correct presentation of rap culture.( Rap is definitely not about nudity but the harshness of life incidents).
I am just wondering how Ali gets such good roles each and every time.
