Its been a great world cup so far. High on goals but also high on some excellent defensive play. Also the goals haven't been cheaply earned. Have seen some really brilliant football so far And too-da-loo Spain and Socceroos. After watching the Australians defend today, I have a feeling Spain will be returning home winless

Goo England Very low hopes to be honest I think England will win. Uruguay isn't the same team since 2010. Their defence is awful and midfield strictly average. Luis Suarez can't save them alone. They way England played against Italy, they should win this pretty comfortably.
Edit: Undeserved lead for Uruguay ...Godin should have been sent off, but that's what you get with Spanish refs

I never had any interest in soccer before... following it casually this year. Just curious... why don't India, Canada, New Zealand (just examples of missing countries) have teams? I'm sure this is old history to you fanatics. Which team(s) are most here rooting for, and why?

Austria for example didn't qualify for the World Cup in the Qualification matches - as far as know the same goes for New Zealand and India. If you like you can find more here: m.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/index.html - you can find all teams all over the world here - qualified and not qualified

Did I jinx England? lol I expected much more from them ...how can you defend Suarez so nonchalantly? But I have to give it too Uruguay, they stepped it up big time after the loss against Costa Rica. Suarez is just incredible.
The ref is still a coward. Godin should've been sent off after only 20-25 mins.

I'm sure this is old history to you fanatics. Which team(s) are most here rooting for, and why? football is actually played by soo many countries and there's also many countries good at it but that makes it hard for teams to get in. . It's the true Wold Cup I think for this reason. Most other sports are only really world cups by name like cricket or rugby- mainly played by only a dozen countries , out of which only 5-6 actually have a winning chance. Whereas, in football, the top 20 are all good teams really and rankings shift so much. I mean just look at Netherlands, they were ranked like 15th even though they were runners up in last world cup. And right now they thrashed Spain who is ranked 1. However because there's so many countries in football, they have extensive World cup qualifying rounds. This is why the football world cup at the moment is actually called the World Cup Finals, the real world cup pretty much is going on all the time during the year as there's always qualifer for someone happening. Other sports have qualifers too, but generally only a few. Eg for cricket the teams like Canada, Netherlands, Afganisthan play in these qualifers. India, Canada, NZ are not that good at football so failed to qualify for this world cup. Though last world cup, New Zealand did actually qualify for first time in 24 years and we actually did really well by our standards as we tied all three of our games. In fact, funnily enough on a technical note, we were the only unbeaten team in the tournament. But we didnt' win a game either lol so didn't make it to more than first round. Though to be honest, I"m not a football fanatic either, in fact I only really watch the world cups. But that's partly cuase I think there's so much football during the year with English Premier League, the Spanish league etc, that I find it hard to truly care about the results.

Sorry, but that's a bit unfair I agree the FIFA world cup is very extensive and has more number of competitive teams, but other World Cups involving International teams are not second tier to it
- Yes, the top 20 teams in football are all good (maybe), and the rankings shift. But you really expect teams like Russia, US, Croatia, etc to win the world cup ?
- And Cricket world cup has had its great upsets too. No one expected India to win the 1983 world cup. But they came out of nowhere and proved everyone wrong. Same with Sri Lanka winning in 1996.
- Also, its not just teams like Ireland, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh etc that play the qualifiers for Cricket World Cup. If you look up something called the World Cricket League, you will see it involves teams you wouldn't expect to have cricket teams like Germany, Italy, Denmark, Japan, etc. There is a promotion/relegation process in the divisions and it essentially leads up to the decision of which teams will participate in the ODI and T20 World Cups

France running riot ..already 3-0 and they missed a penalty. But to be fair, France got a fairly easy group. We'll see what things are about in the next round.

oh please dont think I want to put those sports dow. I prefer both crickete and rugby to football in fact. And I was so proud of Nz winning the rugby world cup last time. but I do think that football world cup is definitely biggest and best.
