Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine set to be retained by Kolkata Knight Riders By Press Trust of India New Delhi: Jan 4, 2014 Gautam Gambhir will lead Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming Indian Premier League as the Shahrukh Khan co-owned franchise has decided to retain the left-handed opener along with West Indies mystery spinner Sunil Narine. Gambhir has been a part of KKR since 2011 season after having spent his first three seasons with Delhi Daredevils. It was under Gambhir’s captaincy that KKR won their maiden IPL title back in 2012 beating Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final at the Chepauk. In his first season with KKR, he had guided the team to the play-offs before losing the Eliminator. Gambhir has been a prolific performer in IPL having scored 2471 runs in 88 matches. “Yes, Gambhir will be retained for the upcoming season. He has been an inspirational leader for KKR and retaining him also helps in maintaining the continuity for the franchise. The huge base of KKR fans have started relating with Gambhir and that’s a big factor towards retaining him,” an IPL official informed PTI. “As far as Sunil Narine is concerned, he has been a champion performer for the KKR in IPL. His wicket-taking ability and economy rate is there for everyone to see,” he added. It was the last season where KKR didn’t exactly have a great campaign under Gambhir’s leadership as they failed to qualify for the Play-Offs primarily due to their away campaign going haywire. KKR had finished seventh ahead of Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils. Despite a disappointing campaign, Narine had held his own scalping 46 wickets in 31 matches. I wonder if they are going to retain anyone else or just these two. I hope they retain a couple of the others as well.

I am a little surprised at Kallis not being retained, but I guess it does kind of make sense - he tends to hold down the RunRate when he is getting his eye in. After that he can accelerate like crazy, but if he fails to do that it hurts the team a lot.
Regardless, I think KKR should be purchase Kallis and Tendo from the auctions because I don't think a lot of teams will be going for them. They should also try retaining Lee. He is doing a fine job in BBL in Australia right now. And they should really give up on Yusuf as their impact player.

^Didn't we hear just recently that Kallis retired? Check Google.

That's only from Test Matches. As far as I know, he has not retired from One Day cricket, so should be available on the auction. Plus I remember reading an interview of his where he said he really wanted to play for KKR again in 2014 because no other team is better looked after than KKR

They will probably price-match Yusuf and Kallis. They should be much cheaper that the other players. They should also try to get one of the local CSK boys, like Vijay or Badrinath to strengthen a rather weak KKR middle order.

I think Kallis is great because he can both bat and bowl, even if he might have a slow run rate at start I think we could really use his experience and he can be the stable player, you can have hitters around him. It certainly has worked well for us in 2/3 seasons. Just last season really where the team failed. And Tendo, we never really gave him a proper shot at it, maybe this time they could actually play him more often. They better not get Yusuf back, that would be a really dumb move, he's hardly ever done well for us. Personally (but I know I will probably be alone in this lol) i would also like Brendon back because I think he and Gambhir had a really good opening partnership going in the year we won it. And he hardly played last year because of international commitments. And also from a selfish point of view, I don't want another team to have him becuase he's one of my fav players.

I am with you on getting McCullum on board as well-kind of. The only problem that causes is the problem KKR have had all along - too many foreign players leading to an unbalanced team.
I say that because McCullum will have to fill in as a keeper because just his batting cannot justify a place in the playing XI. So that will be a booked spot.
Other than him, you cannot keep Narine and Kallis out of the XI if they are in the squad. That leaves room for just another batsman/bowler. And that is why we were never able to give players like Tendo and Eoin Morgan a good solid run in the team.
Instead if we have Bisla as the keeper, we automatically create room for 2 specialists. It would be brilliant if they get Mitch Johnson even though everyone will be gunning for him now. And maybe get another impact middle order player.

DD has given up some very good players, maybe we can get one of those - Irfan Pathan, Morne Morkel, Jayawardene and Warner.

I think, KKR need some power hitters who will actually deliver for KKR We have had Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Yusuf Pathan who have delivered for other teams, but failed big time for KKR. I think Faulkner would be an amazing addition to the team - his performance yday against England was phenomenal. Atleast one out of Faulkner, Maxwell or Johnson should be bought.

Eoin Morgan's been playing really well for England against Australia so we may get him through the right to match card. Faulkner or Johnson would be a really good addition as well.

I would rather go for Ryan ten Doeschate over Morgan though - Tendo can roll over his arms as well and is a solid part timer. Same with Maxwell over Morgan. You can never have enough bowlers in T20s

Kevin Pietersen retires from Intl Cricket - if KKR can nab him, he would be a major asset and game changer. A lineup with KP at no.3 or 4 will never be taken lightly

^Corey Anderson has indeed been great recently, and as a kiwi, I would love for KKR to get him (as i would for any kiwi player).
However, I"m also a bit apprehensive about him because while he has done incredibly well here, don't know how he will fare on indian wickets (that has always been Kiwis drawback). So taking him could be a bit of a risk too. Also because of all the hype surrounding him, not sure if he can deal with that sort of pressure either. In a way, playing in IPL could be harder than playing for NZ because cricket is so huge in India.

I dont know why KKR went against CSK for Kallis in the bidding. They could have gotten him for cheaper by simply using their Right To Match card. Kind of silly - unless they wanted to give Kallis more money lol

Kind of silly - unless they wanted to give Kallis more money lol It looks silly now, but my guess is they weren't intending to use the Right To Match card (maybe they wanted to save it for later), so they must have been trying to get Kallis back on their own through bidding, but then after it reached a certain point, they decided to use the card after all. Although, I do wonder if that is the case, who else they were saving the card for. They have two in fact, so they must have two other players in mind other than Kallis who they want to retain.

Unfreakingbelievable. When I said it would be the dumbest decision above, I genuinely never thought they would actually do it. I would probably have a bet a hundred bucks they wouldn't do it.

I thought they might go for Shakib. Decent buy I think, although we didn't play him too much in the last few years so wonder if that will change.
