Bhaag Milkha Bhaag- 5/10 hearing all the rave reviews, I had pretty high expectations and that turned out to be a really bad thing because this movie came very close to sucking. In the end, i will call it an average movie, but it most certainly isn't a great or even good movie. It is way too melodramatic and manipulative. I can't actually believe most of it would have happened. And it is so incredibly slow paced and dragged out that I almost gave up on it and strugged to finish it. It doesn't feel like there is a story to it but random scenes from Milkha's life thrown together to make a movie. don't even get me started on the songs, most of which should have been cut. Farhan Akhtar does a great job, but he cannot save it. The script is the main problem. I just couldn't get into it at all. Frankly, Chak De India is a hundred times better than this and so are most other sport movies. I really don't get what all the fuss is about.

Last week I watched R... Rajkumar, it was not as bad as a lot of people were saying. This is the first time I was seeing Sonakshi in a movie and I thought Shahid and Sonakshi made a cute couple! The movie had some nice and fun parts, but there was a bit too much maar maar maar for my liking haha. The songs were good though. They're still stuck in my head! The other night I watched Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Although the story idea was nice, it was familiar and reminded me a lot of Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya. Also the acting and dialouges were not very good at all! I think Sonu is the only one who did a decent job in the movie. Last night I watched Rowdy Rathore. This one has to be my favorite out of the three. I liked the story. It reminded me of the good old 90s movies that I used to love to watch as a kid. This was the first time I was watching a Akshay movie since Kambaqt Ishq (which I did not like at all) and I think he was good in this one. Sonakshi was just okay. She's better in R... Rajkumar. And the little girl in the movie was just so adorable! I guess I was having a Prabhu Deva week. Does this mean Wanted is next?

Monika, Wanted definitely has to be on the list. For me it is a tie between Wanted and Rowdy Rathore for Prabhu Deva's best Hindi film (haven't watched Ramaiya Vastavaiya yet)

Re: Prabu Deva, I watched AnyBody Can Dance recently. Nothing to write home about as a movie, very formulaic and predictable, but the dancing was awesome - as you'd expect!

agantuk I may check out Wanted soon then. I don't remember the last time I watched a Salman movie. I guess I just have this bitterness towards him haha. As for Ramaiya Vastavaiya, you're not missing out on anything. Don't bother with that one! haha

I was pleasantly surprised by Rowdy too because by then I had already started getting bored of these formulaic masala entertainers. Once I started forwarding the "romantic" bits, it was a very solid movie with a decent story.
Maybe Wanted is better. But it is a scene for scene rip-off of Pokiri, which was one of the few Tamil movies I have watched (even though that is a remake of its Telugu predecessor LOL).

^ Actually the Telugu one remains the best version to date. However, the Hindi one is good too. However, with Rowdy Rathore, Prabhu Deva went one up on the original, which was pretty nice in itself (yes I like this genre )

I actually went ahead and ended up watching Wanted last night. I guess I expected more from it because there was so much hype around it when it released. Probably because it was one of the first of it's kind after a while so it was well received. But I think I liked Rowdy Rathore better. I liked the story of Rowdy Rathore, but Wanted was also not bad. Any other masla movie recommendations? haha

Dabangg (only the first one) if you haven't watched. Also Singham.

I was actually thinking of watching Dabangg last night, but went for Wanted instead because I was having some sort of PrabhuDeva marathon this week haha. I hadn't considered Singham though. Might check them out soon.

Do you want only Hindi recommendations, Monika? If not, I suggest getting the original Telugu or Tamil movies if you can. Ajay-Singham was all right (because Rohit) but we enjoyed the Tamil Singam with Suriya much more. Every remake or "inspired by" we've watched, we liked the original South movie better.
I don't know what to say about Dabangg. I know it was wildly popular but we, who watch and enjoy lots of Telugu and Tamil movies as well as some other South language ones when we're able, thought it was awful. We disliked it so much that not only have we not watched any of Salman's other "huge masala hits", we were worried that we were going to hate Chennai Express since it was being touted as SRK's venture into masala films. (Then we watched all Rohit's previous films, liked them pretty well, and loved CE, so yay.) I asked someone on the old forum who seemed to be a Salman fan to recommend his best films but didn't get a reply so we've stayed away from all of them. :-/
The last Bollywood movies we watched were Zanjeer 1973 and Zanjeer 2013 "double feature". 2013 was just okay. We were familiar with Ram Charan and his performance was about as usual. Priyanka's Mala was awful-- not necessarily the acting, the character itself. We all three preferred Jaya's spunky, gutsy Mala to the nearly-useless 2013 one; Sanjay's Sher Khan was fun. On the whole we preferred 1973. (I'm so glad my 13yo & 16yo can appreciate old movies in their context and don't automatically dismiss them as some of my friends have said their kids do.)

I seriously liked the Telegu/Tamil version of Singham compared to Ajay's. I laughed & enjoyed the action of the former. Suriya is my most favorite actor from the south after watching two of his movies. Had problem with the language, sounded funny different from hindi & at first sounded so loud but got used to it & saw the superb acting of Suriya just i got used to Rajnikant. And i'm not even from an indian origin.

Thanks for the suggestions Zarahti and lizzyluvsrk. I'm sure the original South versions are a lot better, but I don't understand Telugu or Tamil so I just watch the Bollywood remakes. I'm actually not a fan of Rohit Shetty. I usually don't like his movies, with the exception of Chennai Express. I found Prabhudeva's style to be a bit different from Rohit's. There is more of a raw element there in the characters and the sets (if that makes sense). His movies remind me of the old 90s movies I used to watch growing up, like Karan Arjun.

ah, I/we have to have English subtitles for all of them, so I guess that's kind of one less barrier to the South movies in a way. Rohit's movies are all right, that 3 Stooges slapstick type thing isn't my favorite but my teens love them. I actually liked Zameen, terrifically unrealistic as it was, and Sunday better than the Golmaal movies. (Every one of the "heroes" in Golmaal 1 was a jerk and I kept hoping Vasooli's men would show up and beat the snot out of them.) I was also a little thrown by the same actors playing characters with the same names but the movies having nothing at all to do with each other. They are visually lovely, though, and I've got a soft spot for Rohit because he's so devoted to his team, which I think makes me lean towards liking his movies more than I otherwise would. I'm glad to see you liked R... Rajkumar; we're looking forward to watching it. I like Shahid and I wish his choices were clicking with audiences better.

Zarahti I like Shahid too, so that's probably why I liked R... Rajkumar somewhat. It had it's moments. It's definitely much better than most of Shahid's recent films! There was just a bit too much action/fighting for my liking though. But I guess that was expected from a movie whose tagline is "Pyaar Pyaar Pyaar ya Maar Maar Maar" haha

There were couple of movies that I watched first time recently:
- tees mar khan: stupid beginning good climax, wouldn't give more then 4/10 though - bhul bhulaiya: good story, funny acting but disappointing climax; hubby says Tamil version is better so wait for that; 6/10 - Mickey Virus: thrilling throughout; 8/10 - dhoom 1 and 2; havn't watched any before so thought its a good time ;-); both not more then 5/10, was a good time pass but didn't care much more about it - Bol Bacchan, funny, although AB totally screws as comedy actor, AD was great as usual in comedy; 7/10 - Munnabhai 1; great movie, think it's adapted a bit from patch Adams; 7/10 - Munnabhai 2; nowhere close to the 1st one, no rating

Love breakups Zindagi. 7/10
What a surprise, I didn't know that SRK had a special appearance in this film. Did anyone else here knew that?

Saw R...Rajkumar a couple of days ago, and really enjoyed it. Sonakshi was a nice surprise, I hadn't seen her in a movie since Dabangg. Shahid was adorable (but of course I'm biased lol). And I liked the songs. Overall enjoyable.

Love breakups Zindagi. 7/10 What a surprise, I didn't know that SRK had a special appearance in this film. Did anyone else here knew that? I remember back when it was releasing there was some sort of involvement of Shahrukh in the movie, but then I had forgotten about it and never ended up watching the movie. But a couple of years ago it was on TV and I was watching it as I was cleaning my room and I was pleasantly surprised to see Shahrukh in it!

Dhoom 3 - 4/10
My god, that was just awful. I almost feel alseep. The only thing I liked were the Malang and Kamli songs (manly because Katrina). And Uday (he was cute and honestly his acting was better than Aamir's lol)

Very impressed by Dedh Ishqiya . Years ago Hollywood has Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, this is a more profound but equally funny (rural version) of that movie. Everyone including Vijay Razz is amazing.

Does anyone know any cinema theatre in Ottawa that shows dedh ishqiya ? I'm new to town and saw the trailer of the movie and would like to watch it on the big screen.
Sorry, didn't know where to post this.
